and being a "professional peace-seeker" by nature, he complained to his ministers of the "Arab treachery". In his twilight days, the President of the country, Shimon Berez, volunteered to intervene with his friends in Europe in order to obtain a cease-fire, in vain. The Arab countries sensed the imminent defeat of Israel and no threat or sanctions had any affect on them to cease the destruction of the State of Israel. With the thunder of the cannons, the fate of Israel was sealed. Precisely when the heavy battles took place on the main fronts - the Golan Heights in the direction of the Sea of Galilee, the Bet-Shean region and in Jericho on the way to Jerusalem, an Iranian armored column succeeded in suddenly breaking through from the direction of Rosh Hanikra southwards to Nahariya, where it halted in the center of the city, under crossfire from the improvised military units of Israeli citizens. An atrocious massacre took place among the city's population during a day of looting, raping and murder until these forces re-organized for the continued invasion of the north of Israel. However, overnight, these forces were surprised by Israeli commando forces who reached the area, and in a short and cruel battle, the invading forces were completely crushed. The Israeli public was completely recruited to the emergency situation. Rabbis called for Yeshiva students to "die on the altar of the land and its salvation". Senior citizens and women filled bags of sand and constructed shaky defense lines built of walls of sand bags. In a country situated mainly on a plain and convenient for invasion from different directions, there was no real significance to this effort, except for minor protection of citizens from Arab snipers, only some moral contribution to the citizens of Israel. The Israeli Chief of Staff tried to establish a line of defense in the Jordan Valley and blew up the Allenby Bridge and the Shalom Bridge near Bet She'an. Overnight, the invading Arab armies established additional amphibious bridges. Somewhere north of the Dead Sea, forces from the Eastern front invaded Israel with amphibious tanks due to the low water level. This force joined the Palestinian forces in Jericho. The invading forces were welcomed with great joy by the Palestinians and received the keys to the city. A barrage of shots in the air welcomed the incoming troops, and much ammunition was wasted on the joyous volleys. In the victory celebration held that evening, Marwan Barghouti announced: "We are now setting off on a victory march to Tel-Aviv. We suggest that the government of Israel begin packing its suitcases so long as they still can". Huge columns of tanks moved through the Golan Heights, on all the roads, all traveling in one direction, southwest. Terrorist attacks of Palestinians armed with small and mobile anti-aircraft missile launchers on Israeli airbases immobilized the strength of the Israeli Air Force and without that help, the Arab countries' quantitative advantage defeated the IDF's qualitative advantage. All of the "smart" equipment, the use of drones, night-vision equipment, the precise navigation and range-finding equipment, the smart bombs - all of these were unable to stop the enemy forces, although they did harm them and cause great damage. Like locusts, the tanks of Iraq, Iran, Syria and Pakistan (who joined the fighting at this stage) descended on the perimeter of the Golan Heights, with the purpose of eroding the resistance of the Israeli tanks and relentlessly pushed them backwards. Additional armored columns moved from the direction of Jordan, which joined the invading Arab forces at this stage of the battle, in a gross breach of the peace accords with Israel. Additional columns, Iranian and Syrian, moved from the Lebanon towards Metula, in one column, and in another column towards Rosh Hanikra. Due to the losses of the Israeli Air Force, it had trouble providing an air umbrella for the rest of the armed forces. In night operations, entire Air Force units, with all their equipment, were transferred from air bases in the center of the country, to the air fields in the south of the country, in order to salvage the airplanes and helicopters from the bottleneck imposed by the Palestinian terrorists. Many top paratrooper units covered the areas around the airfields in order to enable the Air Force units to function. This immobilization of the forces in fact neutralized the curfew which had been placed on large sections of the West Bank cities and for the first time the Palestinians felt relief in curfews due to the dilution of Israeli forces. Too late, the Israeli Air Force began to pummel the invading Arab armies. In contrast, the Palestinians did not waste any time and took advantage of the lack of infantry forces in Judea and Samaria to occupy and massacre isolated settlements. The Israeli fighter helicopters and airplanes that succeeded with such effort to ease the stronghold of the Palestinian terrorists with the anti-aircraft weapons, began to hit back at the enemy. The helicopter gunship units that participated in the campaign for many consecutive days without rest, massacred the advancing enemy forces, however, it appeared that the torrent of enemy forces only increased from moment to moment, despite the staggering losses. Egyptian President Mubarak decided to send Egyptian troops into Sinai, and despite the Israeli protest and the grave American warning, commenced "Egyptian maneuvers in the Sinai" in a gross infringement of the Israeli-Egyptian peace. These maneuvers fast became an Egyptian tank trek, which swiftly approached the Israeli borders. That's all folks |
